Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about Corsets
Question 1: What is the difference between the main corset types: waist corset, underbust corset, half-bust corset, and overbust corset?
The waist corset is the shortest corset style and focuses entirely on beautifully accentuating the waist. It ends below the bust and leaves both the ribcage and the hips largely free. This provides plenty of freedom of movement and can easily be paired with a bra. Ideal for anyone looking to shape and highlight their waist.
Underbust Corset
The underbust corset ends directly below the bust and extends down over the hips. It shapes the waist as well as the abdominal area, creating an elegant silhouette. The bust remains free but is gently supported from below, making this corset excellent for combining with various bras or wearing over clothing.
Half-Bust Corset
The half-bust corset covers the lower part of the bust, ending roughly at mid-bust height. This leaves the upper bust area free, offering more freedom of movement than an overbust corset. At the same time, it lifts and supports the bust, creating an attractive décolletage.
Overbust Corset
The overbust corset extends from the hip to over the bust, enclosing it completely. It not only shapes the waist but also supports the bust so comprehensively that an additional bra is not required. If you are looking for a classic, elegant corset silhouette, the overbust corset is the perfect choice.
Question 2: How do I find the right corset size?
Is your waist circumference at the lower end of the specified range? A corset can typically reduce your waist by about 5 cm. If you want a significantly tighter lacing, we recommend ordering the model one size smaller.
Is your waist circumference at the upper end of the range? In this case, a reduction and lacing of up to 10 cm is usually possible.
Choosing the Optimal Corset Length
For the perfect fit, the length of the corset is just as crucial as the width:
- If the corset is too short, the lower abdomen may bulge unflatteringly underneath it.
- If it is too long, it will press against your thighs when sitting or restrict your movement.
Many of our models are available in different lengths. Use the "Front Length" specification as a guide. Our tip: Measure vertically on your body from directly below the bust downwards. This will show you immediately where the corset will reach on you.
Standard Size or Custom Made?
Our standard sizes are optimized for average proportions. If your measurements deviate from the norm—such as a very narrow waist with wider hips or a unique torso length—we recommend a custom-made corset. This guarantees a perfect fit and maximum comfort.
Question 3: What is the difference between a corset and a bustier (corsage)?
A corsage (or fashion bustier), on the other hand, is primarily a fashion garment. While it accentuates the figure, it is not designed for significant waist reduction. It usually uses lightweight plastic bones that provide gentle stabilization but cannot withstand the high tension of tight-lacing.
Question 4: How do I put on a corset by myself?
First, loosen the lacing at the back enough so that the front busk closure can be closed easily without tension.
Next, pull the laces alternately from the top and bottom toward the center at waist level. Repeat this process evenly on both sides until the corset fits snugly and comfortably. Make sure the laces are tightened as evenly as possible and the corset sits straight on your body.
Finally, tie the two loops at waist level into a bow. This can be undone at any time to adjust or remove the corset.
Important: To take off the corset, always loosen the lacing at the back first before opening the front busk closure. Opening the front closure under tension can cause damage to the corset or the clasp.
Question 5: Does a corset need to be seasoned (broken in)?
Question 6: Does a corset achieve a permanent waist reduction?
Question 7: What materials should a good corset be made of?
1. Inner lining of pure cotton: This guarantees a pleasant feel on the skin and is tear-resistant enough to permanently withstand the strong pulling forces of the lacing.
2. Stainless steel corset bones: A smart mix of bones is used here. While highly flexible spiral steel bones on the sides ensure comfortable wear and freedom of movement, rigid flat steel bones stabilize the lacing area at the back to guarantee optimal support.
Question 8: How do you care for and clean a corset?
A corset should never be washed in a washing machine, as this can damage the materials, the steel bones, and the construction. For a thorough cleaning, we recommend professional dry cleaning. Minor stains can usually be removed carefully with a soft, damp cloth and a bit of mild soap. Allow the corset to air dry completely before wearing or storing it again.
Question 9: Is wearing a corset unhealthy or painful?
Especially in the beginning, it is recommended to lace the corset only lightly and let your body get used to it slowly. Over time, the lacing can be adjusted tighter step-by-step as desired.
If pain, pressure marks, or numbness occur, the corset is usually laced too tightly or is not sitting correctly. Loosen the lacing and check the fit. A comfortable, even pressure is normal—pain, however, is never a sign of a correctly fitting corset.
Question 10: What should I look out for if I have a short or long torso?
If the available standard lengths do not perfectly suit your proportions, that is no problem: We are happy to craft your corset to your desired length as part of a custom-made order. Our in-house tailoring workshop implements individual customer wishes with extensive experience and care.
If you are unsure which length is right for you or would like to request a custom order, simply send us an email. We will be happy to assist you personally.
